Spikey Lulu was the final project for an advanced studio in the spring of 2017. It was designed and built collaboratively with a studio of twelve students. Given a budget of $500, we were forced to be creative with sourcing our materials. With our budget we had procured 9 cardboard tubes and 350 lbs of pink felt to work with. We wanted to create a character for the city of Providence to enjoy and interact with. A group of first graders, on their way to recess, walked through the plaza during construction and together they named the pavilion Spikey Lulu. The project was up for 5 days including during the weekly Waterfire celebration which brings out huge crowds of people to Providence's city center.
I took on the role of budgeting and scheduling for the group, as well as organizing group meetings and facilitating communication across all parties. During the design and construction phase I was part of a team of six involved in the creation of over 700 pink felt cones. After the project was finished I was responsible for archiving the work and documenting the process in the form of a small book.
